I am truly honoured!

The Rotary Business Network of Stockholm City in Sweden’s Capitol, kicked off the year 2021 last week and I am truly honoured to have been appointed Chairman of the Network.

We will continue our meetings in digital format while the pandemic is still ongoing. However, we now have established good routines and a practical agenda for conducting the network meetings on-line.

Winning Body Language: We started off this year with a great topic regarding how your body language can influence the outcome of your meetings and businesses (consciously or not). This is especially important now that we normally only present ourselves in “half” person on a digital screen. We learned for example that the body will express itself using only the part you can see. So, our face and upper body will demonstrate what we are really thinking to all who are watching, whether we are aware of it or not.

Kurt Larsson, from Expanding Understanding, who is an expert in this topic of “a successful body language” and who has written books in this subject, available on Bookboon.com, was an enthusiastic guest speaker who shared his extensive experience to us listeners. He provided valuable and practical examples that were really appreciated by us attendees and he received happy comments after his presentation. MegaSuccessAllStars went digital this time!

Are we not lucky after all?

I know I keep repeating myself but are we not lucky after all that this time around when a pandemic captured the world – we have all these amazing technical and digital tools to keep the world going despite all the lockdowns and closed boarders.

Even the worlds yearly “super bowl” of all business events in Los Angeles; The Mega Success business event, could run again this year (December 2020) despite all of us having to stay at home. Since the event was packaged into a new digital format where one episode was released daily during 28 consecutive days where attendees could watch the episodes at a time that was convenient for them.

I really think that the Mega Success event teams had made an excellent digital version where many of the best stage performances and interviews of A-list Hollywood stars and billionaires and successful entrepreneurs from previous years were mixed with new sessions and new knowledge of current and future business strategies from some of the worlds most successful entrepreneurs- and private equity- and investors- strategies for the new world during and after the pandemic.

I really enjoyed it and not least seeing the rerun episodes of people whom I shared stage with and was lucky to meet backstage and allowed to take a photo with. It all feels like yesterday, that I was there with them on stage and backstage.

I just cannot wait for the next time we will all be there again in Los Angeles or wherever the “next” meeting happens. And until then – there is always the digital meeting rooms for us to enjoy!

Since I have worked both professionally and privately with investments and financing-solutions of all kinds, to all sizes of business, from idea to IPO, for so many years, then I can tell you that I have seen it all. And, If you are looking for investors or credit lines of any kind, then you can think about what information would make you give away your savings to a stranger who came up to you on the street and asked you to invest in a business idea he/she has. Rotary Stockholm Business Network event

We had Gunvor as guest speaker!

Last week I hosted the Rotary Stockholm City Business Network event. As often in these covid-19 times, we had the network meeting on-line. This time I had the pleasure of having one of my friends; the lovely and successful Gunvor Engström, as our speaker-guest.

Gunvor, is a very energizing, very competent and positive person who has held a long range of executive positions e.g. she has been on a Swedish government office, she has been CEO of a bank, she has been Chairman of the Board at The Swedish Board Academy, as well as CEO at The Swedish Federation of Business Owners just to mention a few of her assignments. Gunvor is currently working as Board-member-coach and as board professional.

This time I asked Gunvor to tell us a bit about how she has built her career so the audience could take inspiration from her career journey. And what a great topic this was. Gunvor gave us many wise thoughts about how to work your way up the career path. E.g. she said that there are trends in what is considered an attractive CV – e.g. some people think it is good that you remain in one position or in one company for multiple years whereas other consider it better if you have done many different things so you have a wide and broad experience – this is why the best you can do is to just be yourself and at some stage you will be having the “right” candidate profile. Also you should never be afraid to try new things and one of her strongest advices, according to her closing remarks, is that you should hire the best and most talented staff and don’t be afraid if they are more senior and competent than you are. With the most competent staff you will succeed!

What an energizing event we had, and we so much look forward to seeing Gunvor at one of our future events. To thank her for her appearance as guest-speaker, Rotary donated 40 Polio vaccinations in her name – under Rotary’s program “End Polio Now”.

Yes, you are constantly monitored

Yesterday I attended an interesting seminar on how to gather consumer data and make use of it with Artificial Intelligence to streamline your organisation, your supply chain, your calculation of customer lifetime value, and make strategic cost saving- or business growth decisions. E.g. now in times of corona how is the pandemic affecting consumer behaviour. This highly informative seminar was arranged by Databricks.

And yes, as a consumer you are being constantly monitored. We know where you are going since we can keep track of your car and mobile devices where they are picking up signals from, what you are eating, drinking, what you are purchasing, since we can keep track of your credit card, we even know what you are talking about and what values you have since we can trace you on social media. We can even know where your goods are shipped from since we can view the containers coming into the harbours via satellite cameras.

But do not worry, your data is only monitored like a dot in an aggregated data cluster. Both because the data gathering and storing rules and regulations state that we cannot collect individual data, but also because we have no interest in individual data. Nobody can build a business on one individual consumer.

And the gathering and analysis of the aggregated consumer data might be what makes you keep your job during the current pandemic – since your employer can quickly analyse how consumers change purchase behaviours and then reorganize their business to quickly adapt and therewith survive.

Lunch with the Chairman of Astra Zeneca

Chairman of Astra Zeneca: “Amazing Tech-developments for tailored treatments and the resumed covid-19 vaccine study”

The above and much more information was provided by Leif Johansson, the Chairman of Astra Zeneca, on a covid-compliant lunch meeting with just a few of us attending, at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm this Tuesday the 15th September.

Leif has an impressive background as an international businessman and industrial leader from Sweden where he e.g. has been the CEO of Volvo Group, CEO of Electrolux, Chairman of Ericsson and now Chairman of the world’s fastest growing large-cap Pharmaceutical company Astra Zeneca. Astra Zeneca has approximately 70 000 employees and deep roots in UK and Sweden. Astra Zeneca has recently had a major spotlight in the news since they are already in the so-called phase 3 of a study for the covid-19 vaccine, i.e. the final stage of vaccine development before offering it to the public.

Leif understood the curiosity on our minds at the lunch meeting, so he quickly provided us with the following information: The vaccine origins from Oxford University whom AstraZeneca has partnered with to accelerate the development, manufacturing and distribution of the potential vaccine. Agreements have been signed with many nations, regions and global organisations with a current global supply capacity of close to 3 billion doses that AstraZeneca will deliver at no profit during the pandemic He also mentioned that the recently paused study was just resumed a couple of days ago following confirmation by the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority (MHRA) in the UK that it was safe to do so.

Leif further painted a very interesting picture of how technology, artificial intelligence and digitalisation will be beneficial for humans and the capacity to store big data jointly with the AI-tools will make it possible for medical treatments to be tailored, and diagnosis well analysed, in the future. He mentioned e.g. that we are moving from traditional pills with as little as 20 atoms in a molecule to new biologic treatments that comprise of 250.000 atoms.

I asked Leif if he predicted that Astra Zeneca would undergo the same technological evolution that e.g. banks are currently undergoing so that they would within the next decade become an IT-company, and if so, would they buy technology or would they develop inhouse solutions e.g. due to security of information records. Leif responded that since they store anonymous data, they are likely to purchase IT-services from external tech-providers e.g. a large capacity of cloud data storage - rather than becoming a tech-development corporate.

Leif has the talent for explaining the work of his Astra Zeneca in a clear and understandable matter and we learned a lot during the lunch. Happy news, what we learned is that already after having vaccinated 100 people you start seeing a reduction in a population’s virus-spread-curve. Good news for the world!

Round Table meeting with the Governor

Today me and some fellow Rotarians had a Round Table meeting with the Swedish Central Bank’s Governor, Stefan Ingves.

Since it was a Round Table Meeting, I am not going to quote what was said in the meeting other than general information. It was a great meeting and we do have a very experienced Governor which is reassuring in times like this. Stefan Ingves has been part of important managerial groups in previous financial and economic crisis and he has been Governor and Chairman of the Executive Board of the Swedish Central Bank since 1st January 2006 so he was the Governor during the last financial crisis in 2008-2009 as well.

Since Stefan is experienced from previous crisis, he opened by stating the need of having a capacity for the unknown in times like this. He informed of the measures the Swedish Central Bank has taken so far to fend off the adverse effects of economic change that has occurred since the pandemic.

It is off course a tough situation for all central banks since the pandemic is effecting the economy on a global basis and we are still in the middle of the pandemic so we do not know the final outcome yet.

I am really pleased to have had the privilege to talk to and pose questions directly to Stefan at this time of economic and financial uncertainty.

Investor Capital in the current market

Finding capital in the current market environment can be really tricky. And if you are under the age of 35 then you have probably never operated in a market downturn since we have had high economy during some 11 years. You might want to surround yourself with a variation of advisors where some of them have been managing a business in times of economic uncertainty and down-turns in the global economy.

Many investors remain passive in times when the economical arena is uncertain. Make use of this time-period to build business trust and a business relationship with investors so they know about you and your business in the moment when they do decide to act and start investing again.

My business advice in the current market situation is that you keep track of your “burn-rate” (i.e. how fast your capital is being used in your business) and make plans for the worst case scenario which is that it takes a long time before you get more capital. Make a plan where you can pause your business for an indefinite period of time, instead of having to go into default, until you manage to raise more capital.

A Quick Fix for the Environment

A quick fix for the environment!

Providing information is sometimes an easy way to achieve a change in behaviour. I am sure that if everyone knew that the filter in a cigarette contains plastic – then people would not throw it everywhere in the nature and instead they would look for outdoor ashtrays. And if everyone was informed that the ocean does not clean itself and trash, waste, plastic and chemicals that is put in the ocean remains in the ocean – it does not vaporise or disappear.

I am sure that nobody would put a battery in a glass of water and then drink it. Still the sea where we fetch our drinking water is filled with all sorts of garbage.
If we can reach out to everybody with this and other basic information, then I am sure that we would start seeing a change in behaviour. That is why Expedition Baltic Sea, in cooperation with Rotary and the United Nations, is determined to reach out for change in people’s behaviour.

Imagine if we could make everyone change their behaviour what a strong impact that would have. Now, that is a quick fix for the environment and for our health.

Lunch with the Chairman of Volvo

Chairman of Volvo states; “European industry can cope with the current situation”

This Tuesday I had the pleasure of having lunch at Grand Hotel in Stockholm with Rotary and Carl-Henric Svanberg who is the Chairman of AB Volvo.

Carl-Henric is a well renowned businessman and industry leader who has been heading global corporates like CEO of Assa Abloy, CEO of Ericsson and Chairman of BP. Carl-Henric is currently e.g. Chairman of Volvo and Chairman of the European Round Table of Industrialists.

It was so uplifting to listen to his rather positive views about how and why the industries in Europe have a good chance to cope in the current economical situation. Carl-Henric said that for example Sweden has been fortunate to having had political leaders who understood the importance of creating an entrepreneurial environment to the point where Sweden is even considered to being the number two in creating tech companies after Silicon Valley – this gives us an advantage in the current economic situation. He also underlined the importance for the EU to stand united and what a great arena EU is when it comes together and focuses as it is doing in the current situation.

Carl-Henric touched upon many other important subjects and concluded that international cooperation and when people come together and interact – that’s when wonderful innovations are created. So, having an open international arena is the way forward for industries and economies to recuperate financially as quickly as possible.

What a great leader he is Carl-Henric. We all left the lunch meeting with a positive spirit and new energy to go out and create good things for the future. I am personally very happy about Carl-Henric as well since he made me some money; I invested in the company Assa Abloy in the end of the 90’s after having listened to him talk about his strategy for the company when he was CEO there – I sold of the shares in January this year with a gross ROI of +260% (how I wish I would have bought more of the stock).

Global News - we made it!

Can you believe it!

Never say that persistent and consistent work does not pay off. Like Dr Phil said when I shared stage with him in Los Angeles: “How do you eat an elephant? Well, you start nibbling on an ear and then you don’t stop until the work is done.”.

I hope you have seen that we have succeeded: Africa is declared free from the Polio disease! See what is possible when people come together around an issue. Rotary International and Bill & Melinda Gates have contributed greatly to making this possible. Even I got to make a modest contribution by accepting to give 2 free speeches, making Rotary and Bill & Melinda Gates making sure that 240 people got a Polio vaccination (120 x 2).

And don’t we all need this positive news in these times. All is possible when we come together and determine to succeed. Have a great weekend!

In times of extreme digitalisation, I find that networking is more important than ever.

What an amazing lunch with high level discussions we had when I introduced two amazing powerful ladies to eachother.

Karin Apelman, to the left in the picture, is the current Secretary General at FAR i.e. the Institute for the Accountancy professional of Sweden, and she has an impressive background e.g. as Secretary General at the Swedish Export Credits EKN. Gunvor Engström, in the middle of the picture, equally has a powerful background e.g. as Chairman of the Board at both The Swedish Board Academy and the Swedish Board Institute as well as CEO at The Swedish Federation of Business Owners just to mention a few of her assignments.

We are all board professionals and we had so much to talk about and I shared some of the insights from when I was Global responsible for the Wall Street Investment Banks right in the financial turmoil.

My memories of all the Mergers and acquisitions comes back

It's raining - and I am spending this evening reading a book about Business Mergers and Acquisitions, written by a business acquaintance, Robert Sevenius, that he gave me once when we met up to discuss venture capital transactions.

It's a great book and I keep nodding my head all the time since I recognise situations and risks involved in the deals.

Robert is an expert in the subject and the reason for my knowledge is due to me experiencing so any mergers and acquisitions from the inside of companies I have worked with and for, where I have been involved in the actual M&A work. You learn so much from every M&A that you are involved in, I can tell you that.

So happy to have this book to read - it brings up so many memories. This is a great book that I highly recommend.

Time for water cleaning

The ”take-action” culture is required

“Stop talking about it – and get it done”, this sentence is often repeated by one of my business coaches since it was the first great business advice he himself received when he started as an entrepreneur.
This Saturday 11th July 2020, we were a determined team on one of the shores of Stockholm that gathered to take some real action when it comes to cleaning the water.

Divers from the project “Rena Botten” jointly with a team from the organisation Rotary International, including me, worked to clean the ocean from garbage and plastics. We managed amongst other garbage to take up: 2 electric scooters, 12 car-tires and a lot of garbage.

Regarding car-tires: did you know that up to 30% of plastic released into the oceans each year comes from primary microplastics, not the disintegration of larger pieces, a report found that debris from tyre abrasion and synthetic fabrics are said to be the main sources.

E.g. the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive within the EU has been in force since 2008. It requires EU Member States to set up national marine strategies to achieve ‘good environmental status’ by 2020. On the 25th June 2020, a report from the European Commission regarding the MSFD, informs that the members states are not reaching the targets.

Many people and organisations talk about environmental issues and sustainability. But maybe it is time now to go from talking about it - to taking concrete action. I love finance and I see big financial rewards in environmental and sustainability improvements e.g. reduced health care costs. Think about it - it is your drinkingwater and the water where the fish you eat swims, so how do you think it affects your body when the water is contaminated?

Cost cutting and financing with robots

Cost cutting program and business financing solutions + maybe spicing it up with some Intelligent Automation or some Robot Processing Automation or why not some Artificial Intelligence too?

This morning I listened to a webinar about Intelligent Automation with a specific case study connected to a large Insurance Company. The webinar was arranged by Digital Workforce a global Robotic Process Automation (RPA) service provider. And I found myself nodding my head when they commented on the challenges with RPA installations and implementations – where they concluded that it is not creating the robot that is the risk and challenge but rather the other part of the project like e.g. the “people challenge”.

When I worked at OMX/Nasdaq Technology as business configuration analyst for large and complex IT-platforms, the major challenge was to avoid mistakes connected to misinterpretation between customer and IT-developing party, wrong conclusions in requirement analysis etc. Making mistakes during IT-projects is very costly since someone still must pay for all the development hours and employee costs and additional delay of delivery.

That is when consultants like me come in as an efficiency tool.

Facebook reminded me that a year ago I invited my friend the Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to the Nordic and the Baltic countries, Dr Willibrod Peter Slaa, to come to Rotary and present his important work with health care and with financing health care to the poor.

Fighting disease is an important task for Rotary International.
Another important task is working for the environment and cleaning of water.

The Rotary clubs around the Stockholm region are planning an event in the city centre of Stockholm to launch the important work of the Expedition Save the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is terribly contaminated.
The event will take place during lunch hours on the 25th of June and in small groups all with careful and good distance between participants to comply with covid-19 rules.

In a world of chaos

In a world of chaos

I played a quiz with my son about the news of May, and I had completely missed that Jerry Stiller has died. Jerry Stiller plays the father of Jason Alexander i.e. George Costanza in Seinfeld.

That made me realise that all I see in the news now are about the riots in the US and all the rest is about covid-19. It is easy to get all focused on the big headlines and the rest of the world disappears. So, I was reminded that there are so much going on in the world that does not get attention.

I was also reminded of Jason who was on the same stage as I was in Los Angeles. I must tell you that he is just the most professional actor and entertainer. Jason was called in the same morning due to a comedian could not make it – and Jason came on the stage and delivered like you would not believe it. He had the audience laughing so they almost fell of the chairs, and he had even written a tailored song for the specific event. What a success to have him come in and entertain.

I do miss being part of large crowds that comes together to do business and talk about the future on a positive note. But we must wait a while longer until the covid-19 restrictions can be removed, and we can meet up again on the bigger stages.

Until then, there is always Seinfeld on replay and digital “Live” seminars.

If you sell now - You will get a good price

If you sell now – you’ll get a good price

I am getting questions regarding my view of the Real Estate market and where the prices might be heading.

My experience of the 2008 real estate market for private residentials were that the prices in attractive locations froze rather than declined. The sellers merely withdraw their property from the market when they did not get the offer they wanted.

It is not until the economy has been down for a longer period that people start selling at lower prices, since they still need a place to live. The banks also started stress-testing to a larger extent the prospect buyers’ ability to cope with paying rents and mortgages to reduce mortgage-risks that had triggered the 2008 crisis. Now we will get a receipt of if the banks stress-tested enough.

On the other hand, the world has never experienced a simultaneous covid-19 effect all at the same time, so any financial analysis is really hard to predict now.

However, if you are looking to sell a vacation house in an attractive location and you are lucky with the weather making the prospects buyers “vacation-mind” kick in - and since people are not allowed to travel – then you might get a really good price right now. Additionally, the prospect buyers that had planned to buy a vacation place abroad might reconsider and look to buy something close to home instead.

So, as long as you make sure you are not forced to sell then you might still get a very good price, at this time, when the nice weather kicks in.

In times like this we all have to reinvent our way of working. For some sectors that will be more challenging or not applicable, but for many sectors it isn’t all that difficult to be transferring more of the business and more of the tasks to becoming digital – it just takes another way of implementing new steering procedures and organisational planning.

Doing business with people whom you never meet, other than online, sometimes requires a longer due diligence which might be a bit tough if you have a short timeframe. Still it’s doable.

Vicky Omifolaji, the Chief Editor and CEO of the international magazine “The Global Achievers” which is a magazine that features people like Oprah Winfrey, she has never met me in person but felt comfortable featuring me in the magazine based on my digital business footprint.

If you are not already working with your digital business footprint than this is an important step to taking your business on-line and to become a more digital company, and this could help you manoeuvre your business at this time.

The No 1 action when starting a business

Yesterday evening, one of Mel Gibson’s “Lethal Weapon” movies come on channel 4 in Sweden. It reminded me of some things Mel Gibson said when I shared stage with him in Los Angeles in 2018 at the World’s number one Wealth and Mega Success event.

Maybe you didn’t know that Mel apart from being an actor, writing scripts and directing movies, also is a business man who started his own Production company and had to face all the normal steps of entrepreneurship with marketing, structuring and managing a new business. Mel got the question of what he thinks is the number one task to do when you start a business, even before you get a business coach. Mel immediately responded; get a good lawyer. Mel added that when you get into business you are going to meet a lot of “sharks and crocodiles” like you wouldn’t believe. Mel provided lots of valuable business insights.

I am going to add that Mel is such a nice person and that I am super proud to have met him and listened to his experiences. My advice when you start a business is; listen to business professionals who has done it before you and learn from their experiences.

A good pitch = 90% of the sale

I spent an afternoon at a so called “Demo Day”-event. An event where Start-Up businesses are presenting themselves in order to attract investors to get their capital to continue scaling up their business.
I listened to 15 pitches from various industries: financial services (Fintech), Healthcare (Medtech), Fashion industry, Real Estate/urban living, Food industry etc
After having attended so many of these Start Up events – I really must highlight the importance of having a good pitch.
Sometimes, it is much better that someone who is not the founder of the Start Up – is the presenter of the business and the pitch. Because the founder can easily become too much into details and wanting to provide too much information into the “3 minutes”-pitch-speech. Or the opposite when the founder gives no background since they assume you already know everything about their business.

The trick with the Pitch is to:
• Keep it simple
• Have few words and make use of pictures and some statistical numbers instead
• Repeat the main message a couple of times
• Keep in mind that it is just a teaser to get the investor hungry for more information
• Remember to state what problem you are solving with your product or service

If you succeed with having a clear and good pitch, then almost all of your sales job is done, and the investor will merely ask follow-up questions to support their liking of your business idea.
If you are out to raise money; spend a lot of time working on your pitch and presentation skills – it will be the best investment of your time!

A Historical Business Meeting

Visiting Kammarkollegiet in Stockholm i.e. the Swedish Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency that is an authority which also operates commercial undertakings and manages over 170 billion SEK for more than 400 customers. Kammarkollegiet represents the Swedish Inheritance Fund and settles estates where the fund is the heir, manages the Fund and the practical work of suggesting which projects will get the Swedish Inheritance Fund's support.

During my business meeting I found out that there are some true historical treasuries in the room where the meeting took place. Amongst others this beautiful “coronation sky” that was made for the coronation of the Swedish king Gustav III:s in the year 1772. Unfortunately, the coronation sky was never used.

Some business meetings become even more interesting than you could have anticipated beforehand...
